Guest stories
A truly unique experience
With this cheese tasting experience, we want to show you a lesser-known side of the Langhe and Roero area—listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its vineyard landscapes. This part of Piedmont holds much more than world-famous wines: think hazelnuts known across the globe, and outstanding cheeses like the ones in this tour.
For us, every product has a story worth telling—a story made of people and traditions. Meeting those who create these local excellences helps you feel a different rhythm of life, guided by nature, animals, and seasons—rhythms we often forget in everyday routines.
Don’t picture a huge farm—this is a small, real place run by two brothers who chose to revive one of the oldest jobs in the world: shepherding.
It’s a joy to step into their world and join a walk with the goats, raised semi free-range.
You can try milking and then turn freshly milked milk into cheese in a real dairy workshop. While the milk becomes cheese, you’ll enjoy an unforgettable cheese tasting in Langhe & Roero (we’re in Roero, but some cheeses are typical of the Langhe!).
The tasting happens either in the woods or in a small “ciabot” surrounded by nature. Depending on conditions, availability, and the weather, we may drive to the farmer’s home for the tasting.
You’ll taste goat and cow cheeses made on-site (raw milk only), local salami, fruit or preserves, wine, and seasonal bites paired with the cheeses.
You might even check whether the farm’s hens laid some fresh eggs—and, if so, taste those too!
The experience lasts around 2 hours, depending on your curiosity and group size.
Cheese tastings are fairly common in our area. Many wineries, bars, and trattorias offer wine-and-cheese pairings, sometimes with great explanations of the cheese styles you’ll taste—aging methods, maturity levels, aromas (some… not exactly polite!), and how they shape flavor.
Our Roero cheese experience goes further. You’ll see and understand the whole production cycle. You’ll meet the true “tool” of a farmer: respect and daily care for the animals. The final product always reflects what the animals ate and how they were looked after.
This visit doesn’t follow a strict stopwatch. In general, it lasts about two hours—but it depends on your group size, how the animals are doing that day, and (a lot) on your curiosity. When guests ask good questions, producers love to share more!
The cheese experience must always be booked and agreed with the producer. We can usually plan it in almost any season. It’s a complete experience on its own, and it pairs beautifully with one of our Wine Tours or with a Weekend in the Langhe.
Castagna Granda: a gentle giant of Roero

In the heart of Roero, among steep hills and dense woods, you’ll find a natural monument: the Castagna Granda. This centuries-old chestnut tree, with its imposing presence and wide, lush canopy, is much more than a tree—it’s a living symbol of nature’s strength and a quiet witness to the past.
Castagna Granda, with its twisted, intertwined trunks, is breathtaking. Its bark, its knotted branches, the stories that passed beneath it: around 400 years old and about 10 meters in circumference. A true colossus—a gentle giant resting in a meadow, surrounded by other majestic chestnuts.
Walking under its canopy, especially on summer days, feels almost magical. The cool, welcoming shade offers a real pause—and, yes, maybe even a moment of meditation. In fall, as the fruit ripens, the ground fills with chestnuts that locals gather with care, continuing a tradition that returns year after year.
This monumental tree—and the surrounding woods—also provides habitat for several local wildlife species.
Visiting Castagna Granda means carving out time for peace and quiet. Slow time, just the way we like it. It’s the perfect place for your picnic, where you can enjoy Roero flavors surrounded by nature.
If you’re looking for a corner of paradise to reflect, relax, and reconnect, Castagna Granda is waiting with open arms, ready to share its ancient wisdom and timeless beauty.
The magic of saffron

In the heart of Roero, saffron grows too. Delicate and fascinating, with lilac petals and precious red stigmas, it demands passion, dedication, and deep respect for nature.
Saffron cultivation is an art built on patience and meticulous care. When the blossoms open, harvest begins—precision work done at dawn, while flowers are still closed, to protect the stigmas’ quality. Each flower is hand-picked with extreme delicacy, a gesture repeated dozens and dozens of times.
After harvesting, flowers go to the lab for the most delicate step: separating the stigmas. Only the three central red threads are taken from each flower and then dried, a process carried out with great care to preserve saffron’s remarkable aroma and coloring power.
The result is a top-quality spice, appreciated not only in Italy but abroad as well. Saffron is loved for its intense aroma, vibrant color, and unique flavor—adding a touch of magic to both traditional and innovative dishes.
Growing saffron is an act of love for the land and its traditions. You’ll find it in this tour, and you can satisfy every curiosity directly with the growers.
Monteu Roero: a small gem in the heart of Roero, Piedmont

Monteu Roero is a small, precious village set in the Roero hills, Piedmont. It sits about 40 kilometers south of Turin, surrounded by a varied landscape of vineyards, woods, and steep “rocche” ridges.
The history of Monteu Roero is ancient, like many Roero villages. It dates back to Roman times and has medieval roots. Its name comes from the Roero counts, a noble family that ruled the area in the Middle Ages and left a strong mark on local culture. A key landmark is the Roero Castle, a beautiful fortress that dominates the landscape and offers panoramic views. Its towers and walls still whisper stories of knights and noble ladies.
Geographically, Monteu Roero is a great starting point for exploring the region. Its hills produce grapes for excellent wines, such as Roero Arneis and Nebbiolo (here, the denomination is simply Roero). A walk along the Rocche del Roero may even reveal fossil traces in the yellow tuff walls.
Monteu Roero isn’t only about wine. The village is also known for fruit—especially peaches and strawberries—and for delicious hazelnuts.
Before or after the tour, you can spend a little time exploring the surroundings. And if you’d like more ideas for the Roero area, here’s the dedicated page in our Guide.
The area I’m describing is part of the broader Langhe-Roero and Monferrato landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014.
