Treiso: Discover it with a Trekking in the Langhe of Barbaresco
If you are a lover of trekking and nature, come with me to discover Treiso, an enchanting village rising on the hills of the Barbaresco Langhe in Piedmont. Prepare to be surprised by the fresh air and trails with panoramic views. You’ll pass through vineyards that change with the seasons and see the peasant history that has evolved and created elegant, well-kept corners. Ready to hit the road? Lace up your boots, the journey begins now.
The Seven Brothers Rocks: A Masterpiece of Nature
One of the highlights of trekking in Treiso is a visit to the Rocche dei Sette Fratelli, a system of deep and scenic gullies that tell millennia of geological history. These natural formations are the result of clay soil erosion and represent an interesting setting to discover in the Langhe. Their name is linked to a local legend about seven brothers who, for disobeying their parents and disrespecting their sister and priest, were turned into rocks.
Along the way, you’ll enjoy views that stretch broadening the horizon, among vineyards and small woods that enliven the landscape. In autumn they are dressed in the interesting colors of the Langhe foliage, believe me, it is really worth a trip! These places are not only a paradise for hikers, but also a must-see for lovers of photography and unspoiled nature.
Barbaresco Tasting: A Journey into the Flavors of the Langhe
The Legends of Treiso: Between Myth and Reality
Like any self-respecting ancient village, Treiso has its legends. One of the most famous is that of the Rocche dei Sette Fratelli, but other stories are lost in the mists of time. It is said, for example, that the spirits of the monks of the Montersino convent still roam the woods around Treiso, intent on protecting their hidden treasure.
These stories passed down from generation to generation add charm to the trek and make the experience even more inviting.
Practical Tips for Trekking
Before you set off on your trek, for any trek, I would say, and not after the Treiso one, here are some practical tips to make your experience unforgettable:
- Clothing: Choose layered, comfortable, and appropriate clothing for the season. Don’t forget a waterproof jacket, as the weather in the Langhe can change quickly.
- Shoes: Wear comfortable hiking shoes suitable for hilly trails. The trails are well-marked, but good shoes will provide stability and comfort.
- Water and snack: Bring a water bottle and something energetic with you. Even if the routes are not long, it is always best to be prepared.
- Camera: The views of Treiso are stunning in person, but they stand out in photographs—remember your camera or smartphone to capture the best moments.
IDEA FOR A LONG WEEKEND IN THE BARBARESCO AREA
The Route: Two Rings Between History and Nature
To explore Treiso and its surroundings, I thought of an itinerary divided into two loops, starting and ending in the heart of the town. The first loop is about 9 km, with an elevation gain of 300 meters: an itinerary accessible to everyone, offering enchanting views of the hills and vineyards. The second, shorter loop measures about 6 km with an elevation gain of 250 meters. This route is also suitable for anyone and offers striking views and must-see points of interest. Here, you will find some magnificent fig trees to observe and perhaps to … taste!
Combining these two treks, for a total of 15 km, will allow you to get to know Treiso from different perspectives. You’ll walk through lush vineyards, explore and understand the history of the Rocche dei Sette Fratelli, and admire the installations that grace the village.
A Country to Discover: Treiso and Its Wonders
Treiso is not just a village; it is a veritable lookout overlooking the vineyards of the Langhe. With its imposing parish church dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, the town dominates the central square, offering a unique view of the vineyard-covered hills.
But Treiso has ancient roots that go back to the Neolithic period. Recent archaeological discoveries have unearthed one of the few ancient Piedmontese Neolithic sites, testifying to human presence in this area since ancient times. And if that were not enough, Treiso saw the passage of the Romans, who walked these same paths over two thousand years ago.
A historical curiosity concerns the hamlet of Montersino, where a convent was founded around the year 1000. Even earlier, a church dedicated to St. Alexander had been built, a sign of the area’s importance already in medieval times.
Barbaresco Winery Visit | Taste one of the Great Kings of Reds
Barbaresco has nothing to envy the more noble Barolo. Indeed, the game between the two is delicious and addicting!
The Vineyards of Barbaresco: An Age-old Tradition
To walk through Treiso, and generally through the hills of the Langhe, is to immerse oneself in a landscape shaped by the work of man and nature, where Nebbiolo vineyards dominate the mountain. I remind you that Barbaresco and Barolo, two famous wines in the world’s wine shops, are “children” of the Nebbiolo vine. The vineyards in these areas are tended with a dedication handed down from generation to generation.
During the trek, you will have the opportunity to see these vineyards up close, discover the berries and leaves in the different seasons (yes, it is a trek that never gets tired because it is always different!), and maybe try to understand some secrets of the various jobs in the vineyard by talking to the men and women you will find at work. During the eventual visit to wineries, you will be able to satisfy some curiosity.
The Village of Treiso: A Dive into the Past
In addition to nature and wine, Treiso offers a small old village atmosphere, where time is Slow, just as we like it. Strolling through its streets, you’ll notice the stone houses, cobblestone lanes, and a few older adults sitting in the cooler waiting for your nod to initiate a conversation!
The Parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, with its imposing facade and richly decorated interior, is the spiritual heart of the town and a must-see for anyone who wants to learn about local history and culture. Don’t forget to stop on the main square for a moment to enjoy the view, perhaps with a good glass of wine.
“Barolo to Barbaresco”: self-guided Langhe trekking
2 nights or 4 to get to know the Langhe by walking. With various possibilities and options!
Trekking in Treiso is not just a nature walk; it is a journey through a unique area’s history, tradition, and flavors. Every step will be enjoyable whether you do a single loop or complete the entire trail.
The Langhe is famous for its wine, and Treiso certainly offers something interesting. Come walk among its vineyards, explore its fortresses, and be captivated by its history. At the end of the day, relax with a good glass of Barbaresco, enjoying the view of the hills tinged with gold at sunset. This experience will leave your heart filled with memories and the desire to return.
Happy trekking!
