Why Choose the Langhe for Your Vacation?

Because we all need to rediscover the right pace, the ancient flavors, colors, and rhythms of slow living!
The Langhe and Roero are destinations that will enchant you even before you arrive. If you’re dreaming of a journey through gentle landscapes, excellent wines, authentic villages, and walks among vineyards, you’ve found the right place.

They say that every journey has three main stages: when you dream it, when you live it, and when you remember it.

Where Are the Langhe and Roero Located?

Rolling hills as far as the eye can see, neat rows of vineyards, castles, centuries-old wineries: welcome to Piedmont, between the provinces of Cuneo, Asti, and Alessandria.

  • Langhe: south of the Tanaro River, home to Barolo and Barbaresco
  • Roero: north of the Tanaro, wilder and more wooded hills

Alba is the central hub: easily reachable from Turin by train or car, and from there, your adventure begins.
You can find detailed information about the area in the dedicated section of our Guide: Guide to Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato.

What to See in the Langhe: Areas, Villages, Castles, and Gourmet Stops

The Barolo Langa

A full 3,000 hectares of land are dedicated to the production of Nebbiolo, which, in the silence of the cellars, will become the celebrated Barolo wine. The towns of the “Barolo Langa” are: Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Diano d’Alba, La Morra, Monforte d’Alba, Novello, and Serralunga d’Alba. Here, you can capture some of the most beautiful and famous views, and in the autumn, you’ll enjoy the enchanting foliage. Don’t miss the Cedar of Lebanon, a monumental tree symbolizing love, and the Colorful Chapel of Barolo, a cheerful and original monument amidst the excellent vineyards of the Ceretto winery.

The Hills of Barbaresco

Often considered the younger brother of Barolo, Barbaresco is no less appreciated. The difference between Barolo and Barbaresco lies mainly in their aging periods, but when it comes to villages and landscapes, this area is just as stunning! Small villages like Neive and Barbaresco are worth a visit. Be sure to visit the Barbaresco Tower and the Regional Wine Shop of Barbaresco, where wines from local wineries are available for tasting every day.

Grinzane Cavour

Staying with the wine theme, Grinzane Cavour Castle hosts the Regional Wine Shop of Piedmont. Inside, you can also delve into the history not only of Piedmont but of all Italy through wine. It was here that Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, lived in the 19th century, creating a hub for research and experimentation in wine that led to the birth of the great Piedmontese red wines.

How Much Time Should You Spend on a Vacation Like This?

This is truly “the mother of all questions”! And honestly, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The time depends on you and on how much you have available. In these areas, you can savor a weekend getaway or enjoy every day over a more extended period, without ever getting bored! The region is vast and varied. Plus, following the Slow Days philosophy, these lands are meant to be explored slowly. ADAGIO!

A Perfect Vacation Idea: 5 Days Between Langhe and Roero

Day 1: Wine Tour

A self-guided or local guide-led drive through the heart of the Barolo Langa. Begin your journey into Piedmont’s food and wine culture: extraordinary historic wineries as well as small, family-run estates where you’ll experience the genuine warmth of country hospitality. A delightful lunch with a view will be the perfect moment to relax.

Day 2: E-Bike Tour Among the Hills

An e-bike tour for a fun ride up and down the hills of the Barbaresco area. With pedal-assist, the climbs will feel much easier. For your gourmet break today, you might enjoy an aperitif atop the Barbaresco Tower, followed by a rich wine tasting in a local cellar.

Day 3: Culture and City Life

Alba is a medieval city with Roman origins, and evidence of its history can be found both in the historic center and underground. If you’re staying nearby, a visit to Underground Alba is a must. Alternatively, you can hop on a convenient train to Turin (with departures throughout the day) to explore a beautiful city rich in history and monuments. I recommend a guided tour focused on Turin’s culinary delights, like gianduiotto chocolate and the famous bicerin drink.

Day 4: Hands-On Cooking

A traditional cooking class with a final tasting. Hands in the dough and a glass of Barbera in hand. It’s a fun way to learn, prepare, and savor Piedmontese cuisine. If you’re part of a group, you’re guaranteed to have fun. If you’re a couple, you’ll bring home recipes and memories to recreate together.

Day 5: Explore the Roero

A day spent discovering the Roero, the other face of this UNESCO territory: even though it’s only a few kilometers away from the Langhe, the landscape changes — more woods and orchards, fewer vineyards. Roero is an outdoor paradise: easy hikes, mountain biking, horseback riding, and more challenging trekking—a dive into nature filled with historical hints.
