Experiences recounted
Do you know how the Vespa came to be?
The story of the Vespa is tied to the post-war era and the rebirth of Italy following the arduous years of the Second World War.
The Vespa was created by the renowned Italian manufacturer **Piaggio**. The first Vespa appeared on the market in 1946, under the leadership of Enrico Piaggio. It was designed by aeronautical engineer Corradino D’Ascanio; the project aimed to provide Italians with an affordable, practical vehicle for navigating cities that were still difficult to traverse due to the lack of proper roads or the poor condition of existing ones.
The Vespa made an immediate impact with its innovative design: small wheels, an open frame, and an engine positioned beneath the seat. It captured the hearts of millions of Italians, becoming a symbol of freedom and independence.
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the Vespa became a status symbol—appearing in films, songs, and works of art—and helped define a new cultural identity for Italy.
Today, the Vespa remains an icon in the world of scooters. Its classic models are still highly cherished and sought after by collectors, while more modern versions continue to captivate international markets and riders of all ages.
