Where to spend a Weekend in Pimonte? Alba, capital of the Langhe and a food and wine weekend

So… how about a lovely weekend in Piedmont to admire the Langhe and enjoy the excellent food of this area? Have we convinced you?

Since these hills have become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the area’s fame has exploded, so much so that it has attracted tourists from all over the world and, to this day, it is considered one of Italy’s excellences for tourism.

It is a place where you can search for small wineries or visit the trendiest ones, enjoy great food in typical restaurants or modern taverns, and visit small villages, castles, and museums. Nothing is missing!

When to visit the Langhe?

In October and November, there is the grape harvest, the fall foliage, the truffle fair, fantastic views, but … it is also the most popular time, very crowded, and prices soar.
It is always full of establishments, restaurants, and even wineries, and you have to book well in advance, especially on weekends.

Winter is quieter, and the snow-covered vineyards are charming and almost magical, perfect for a romantic Piedmont weekend.

Perhaps we prefer spring or summer; the weather is perfect for discovering this area with treks in nature, and why not … even on a lovely Vespa.

Weekend Piedmont, a weekend of food and wine!

Barbaresco or Barolo? Anyway, it’s food and wine weekend, Langhe

I am often asked…but do you prefer Barolo or Barbaresco wine?

They are both excellent wines; it is tough to choose.

Barolo is a majestic, austere, structured wine with floral and ripe red fruit notes on the palate, with firm tannins and aromas always reminiscent of underbrush, tobacco, leather, and white pepper.

A full-bodied and structured wine like Barolo can express itself differently depending on the grape varieties from which it originates. It can be more or less robust/elegant depending on the commune from which it comes.

On the other hand, its cousin Barbaresco is more delicate and refined; on the palate, we can feel red fruit notes and floral notes reminiscent of rose, cherry, leather, and white pepper.

But it is still not a light wine; the character is strong, and its delicacy refers to the floral notes and fewer tannins than King Barolo.

Have I convinced you to try a lovely weekend in the Langhe? A food and wine weekend or a Piedmont wine-tasting weekend to savor everything about this great area!

Who is the Barbaresco tasting aimed at?

The characteristics of Barbaresco are a structured wine, the characteristic color of a nice full, ripe red, intense and pleasant to the nose. The intensity of its flavor and aroma does not reach the levels of Barolo, but, in some ways, makes it an even more pleasant and “easy” wine to enjoy. It appeals to a more coveted audience of wine lovers. Both those whose palates are already accustomed to important tastes and those who prefer less full-bodied and intense wines. They will tell you that you will taste rose and violet-like aromas and then wild strawberries and cherries in the flavor. It’s worth trying!

Where to taste Barbaresco?

Barbaresco releases olfactory and taste sensations, but it will also fill your eyes with many other trends in the production cellars. Barbaresco cellars are also beautiful to visit. The producers will let you taste their best Barbaresco, and you will be enchanted!

How many Barbaresco producers are there?

The Barbaresco production area is not very large. The area around Alba includes four municipalities, Barbaresco, Neive, Treiso, and San Rocco, and about 700 hectares of Nebbiolo. Producers fall into two categories: those who give their production (in part or whole) to the Cantina dei Produttori di Barbaresco and those who sell directly. There are over 100 producers, and they characterize their products according to CRUs. They are called crù, the appellations based on the vineyard and location.

What are the production areas of Barolo?

We find the first Barolo appellation since the mid-19th century. And it is precisely in Barolo that we see it. We are in Piedmont, province of Cuneo. The DOCG is given to the production of the following communes: Barolo, La Morra, Monforte, Serralunga d’Alba, Castiglione Falletto, Novello, Grinzane Cavour, Verduno, Diano d’Alba, Cherasco and Roddi. For some communes, however, not all vineyards are accepted as Barolo. Your weekend in Barolo and Barbaresco will let you discover many enchanting corners!

What are the similarities between Barolo and Barbaresco?

What are the differences between Barolo and Barbaresco?

First of all, the soil that hosts them. Barolo is found in limestone and tuff with many minerals in the subsoil, which are then felt overbearingly in the glass. Barbaresco lives and thrives among sandier soils, and so here is a wine that is full and firm but more velvety, soft, pleasant, and elegant.

And here are your answers!

5 star ratingExcellent tour of the Langhe. Claudia from Slowdays organised a week in Piemonte for my wife and myself during the truffle festival. She was most responsive to all our email requests and our various changes. We spent 2 months in Italy but Claudia helped make Piemonte a destination we will return to. A highlight was the truffle hunt with Charlie and his dog. It was an awesome morning trekking the hazelnut trees to watch him dig for truffles, a most engaging fellow. Claudia also organised all our accommodation, restaurants and drivers and everything went without a hitch. Our driver and guide for 2 days Gabrielle and he was absolutely amazing. We visited several wineries chosen by Claudia in the Barolo and Barbareso and they were the most passionate wine makers in most places that I've encountered. The lunches were great and because we most wineries and lunches were just the 2 of us. I cannot recommend Slowdays enough. It was organised exactly as we wanted it, tailored absolutely to us. Claudia also changed a departure time for us at short notice on a Sunday and that is service that you rarely receive any where. In conclusion, if you want a private guided tour from singles to groups of family or friends then this is the company to use. Claudia really did amaze me.

Wedding Anniversary in Alba Claudia went out of her way to organize the ebike tour for my husband and I even though she was "closed" for logistics matters. It was a fantastic and breath taking experience cycling through the rolling hills of Langhe through La Morra and Barolo. The biking guide was friendly, attentive and made sure that we were "safe" every bit of the way. We also signed up for the truffle hunting tour. The truffle hunter was so passionate about his work. His dog Gigio even found a white and black truffle for us that day. Thanks to Claudia and her team, my husband and I enjoyed ourselves tremendously.
